Acid indigestion or heartburn time

Are you one of the many Indians who love to eat? However experience occasional acid indigestion or heartburn time and again?
This is called acidity and this feeling is due to excessive production of acid by our system.
A very simple and immediate solution, which anyone would take would be to take some alkaline product to immediately neutralize the acid. However, this would only fix the problem temporarily.

In Ayurveda, the root cause of an imbalance is analysed and taken care of, and not just a masking or covering the symptoms.
How does authentic Ayurveda solve the problem of Acidity or hyperacidity and provide long term relief?

Amlant, from Maharishi Ayurveda has the answer which everyone is looking for. The special and natural blend of herbs in formulated for providing long-term reliefe gives Amlant the ability to balance occasionally occuring stomach acidity and support the overall digestion.
So how does Amlant exactly work and why is it better than the other standard hyperacidity products?

It is because standard hyperacidity products work to neutralize acid. Just as their product advertisements claim, comfort comes within 6 seconds or 9 seconds or sometimes even a few minutes. But what happens after the initial relief? The acidity along with the pain comes right back in a matter of minutes and this time more discomforting than before.

This phenomenon is called The Rebound Effect. By taking any Alkaline product, we feel relieved as the acid in our stomach gets neutralized. But at the same time, ourbrain gets the signal that the quantity of acid, which is important for the digestion of food, is low and immediately directs the system to produce more acid. And so hyperacidity comes back, or rebounds with greater intensity.

Upholding tradition, theAyurvedic formulation Amlant, is derived from ancient Ayurvedic texts and naturally works to create balance where imbalance exists. Besides having a fast-acting effect on acidity in the stomach, which standard over-the-counter products also do, Amlant helps the brain produce acid in a balanced manner and therefore avoids the Rebound effect before it can even take hold.

Madhumeha is vataja type of prameha where ojas of shareera itself goes out through mutra. So shamana i.e. pacifying therapy is better.
If rogi is having good strength and the disease is also new then shodhana therapy could be considered.

Karshya mehi are underweight. They need to increase the body’s immunity and balance the harmones to prevent further damage to the body.So they need Santarpana and Brihmana therapy.Santarpana means replenishment of the body.Brihmana means increasing the bulk of the body.

They don’t need shodhana therapy. They require only shamana therapy.
Abhyanga with Ashwagandhabala laxadi taila or Ksheerabala taila is advisable.
Anuvasana basti and brihmana bastis are highly beneficial.

Sthoulya mehi are obese. They need apatarpana and samshodhana therapy.Apatarpana means to cause loss of weight by denourishment. This method works in people in whom madhumeha is caused due to additional weight.Samshodhana is cleansing of the body.So both Apatarpana and samshodhana is brought about by a specific treatment called Panchakarma therapy.

Panchakarma treatment can be advised according to the dosha and dushya involvement and specific treatments according to any complications.

1.Deepana and Pachana therapy.
2.Abhyantara Snehapana.
4. Mridu Swedana (precautions explained below)
5. Vamana
6. Virechana
7. Basti
8. Nasya

Swedana is contraindicated in prameha.Swedana does utkleshana and vilayana of doshas which are deeply adhered to the dushyas. But in diseases like prameha, kushta, visarpa the doshas are already in utklishta avastha so they don’t need swedana.

Prameha is characterised by shithilata of dhatus due to involvement of too much vitiated kapha, meda and udaka. So if strong swedana is done it causes depletion of all dhatus making the patient weak.

But it becomes necessary to do the swedan as poorvakarma for shodhana therapy. In this case depending on the severity of ama, swedana could be done by giving nadi sweda or bathing with warm water , wipe and immediately covering the body with  thick blankets.

Few other procedures can be done according to the necessity and for prevention.

1. Shirodhara: to combat stress, disturbed sleep, reduces hypertension.
2. Pizichili and Navarakizhi: rejuvenation helps in diabetic neuropathy by strengthening nerves and increase immunity.
3.Neem lepa and parisheka:Beneficial in underlying skin issues, itching in the body and prameha pidakas.
4. Udvartana in obese persons.
5. Netra tarpana and Aschyottana in diabetic retinopathy.

ccording to Ayurveda skin has seven layers. Each layer supports the layers above it.When all the layers are healthy and balanced; skin is effective in performing all functions. These layers are located not only superficially but extending to the deeper levels of the body. A skin disease is always rooted deeply into the Dhatus.

Mere external applications do not reach the deeper layers of the skin. As a result the symptoms go away temporarily and the disease is not taken care permanently. But Ayurveda focuses on the root cause of the disease and treats it accordingly. The medication may take a few weeks to remove the symptoms but the diseases are treated at a permanent level.

Skin Diseases are prevalent in rainy season as this is the time of Pitta aggravation. All the heat which is accumulated in summer season gets aggravated in the rainy season. Skin Disease in general is called as Kusta in Ayurveda. Majority of the skin diseases are chronic in nature.

Leech Therapy for Acne

Since ancient times, leeches were used to treat many illness and disease through bloodletting. Sushruta included bloodletting procedure under fine bio-purification procedures stating that the removal of impure blood from the body treats the root cause of the sufferings.

Leech therapy is used for many diseases e.g. Arthritis, Varicose Veins, Deep Vein thrombosis, Ulcers, Abscess and various skin diseases including Acne.

In Ayurvedic texts Acne is mentioned as “Yuvan Pidika”. Ayurveda considers vata, pitta and kapha as three doshas which are building blocks of body constitution and it deals with the disease by applying various medical, surgical and par surgical methods of treatments to balance these three doshas.

The etiopathology of the disease yuvan pidika is considered to be due to vitiated blood (Rakta Dushti) along with kapha and vata. Vitiated kapha blocks the normal excretory function of skin and get the waste material stagnated inside, producing symptoms like itching, pustules and module formation. Vitiated Rakta that also get stagnated, and produce multiple eruptions, redness, raised local temperature, thick bloody discharge and abscess. To get rid of the problem, the pathophysiology of the disease should be break down and for this purpose the disease causing vitiated doshas should be either removal from the body or to be pacified with local or systemic medication.

Leech therapy is a well accepted treatment for vitiated Rakta dosha. As the circulating blood acts as a carrier of vitiated doshas, and  responsible for the disease producing pathology. The process of removing this stagnated blood i.e leech therapy will prove significant to treat the disease. Leech when applied at the site of the disease, removes the stasis of blood. It also improves the micro circulation to the tissues by removing stagnated blood. Leech therapy also improves capillary tissue perfusion and thus supplying proper oxygen and nourishment to the skin.

Hence, we conclude that leech therapy is the best alternative in treating acne, and even surpasses pharmacological treatments.

Hepatitis is mentioned as ‘kamala’ in Ayurveda classics
Due to the aggravation of Pitta by excessive alcohol intake, too much heavy, oily, spicy food, etc. the liver can become diseased. When Pitta is out of balance and disease begins in the liver this can result in disease of the blood, muscle tissue, and billiary system.
The manifestation of this disease will be Kaamala

The symptoms of "Kaamala include:
• Loss of appetite and taste
• Generalized weakness
• Yellowish discoloration of the eyes, nails, oral cavity, and urine
• Vague body pains
• Burning sensation
• Weakness in all sensory organs

Once hepatitis is advanced and the immune system is highly comprised emaciation will be present as well. Ayurveda teaches us that hepatitis involves all systems in the body including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and the gastrointestinal system as
well as the skin.

Aacharya Charak describes two basic types of Kaamala (hepatitis or jaundice).

1. Shakhasrita is caused by the minimal aggravation of Pitta and Kapha, and is easily curable.

2. Kumbha Kaamala results from very high Pitta and is difficult to cure. It can become incurable if not attended to immediately.

Symptoms of Hepatitis such as generalized edema (Shotha), excessive thirst (Atitrishna), bloody stools (Krishna Varna Mala Mutra), vomiting blood (Rakta Yukta Chardi), red eyes (Rakta Netra), dizziness (Bhrama), drowsiness (Tandra), total loss of appetite (Teevra Agni Mandya), and hepatic coma (Nashta Sanjna) indicate that the liver disease is at an incurable stage, and the patient is believed to be terminally ill.

According to Ayurveda, hepatic liver disease is caused by "Vimargagamana", which is abnormal flow of constituents in other Srotas resulting in abnormal accumulation of that constituent in the Srota in which it is abnormally flowing. Also, it causes its deficiency in its own Srotasa. In the case of Kaamala there is Vimargagamana of Raktamala Pitta into the Raktavaha Srota, which should be going to the Annavaha Srota and excreted trough the Purishavaha Srota.
